Early years groups called to speak to official inquiry

Early years organisations and local authorities from across Scotland have been invited to give oral evidence to the education committee as part of the Scottish Parliament's ongoing early years inquiry. The committee has received 50 written responses to the inquiry, and is now calling on a selection of representatives from the sector to submit a further report and make a presentation at committee meetings throughout November.

Year 2 children from Liberton Primary School in Edinburgh pretend they're swimming with sharks at one of the first dance workshops to be rolled out across Scotland. The three-year Dance in Schools project, led by YDance, is funded by the Scottish Executive Health Department as part of the Active Schools programme. Golf has proved the surprising hit of the curriculum, says June McHugh, headteacher at Greenfields Childrens Centre 'Slice', 'putt' and 'birdie' are all terms that are known to the children here since they have been encouraged to take up golf. The achievement they feel when they hit that hoop is fantastic, and we now leave the equipment out throughout the day so that they can have a go whenever they feel like it.

New fathers are expected to be offered six months' unpaid paternity leave in the forthcoming Work and Families Bill. A spokeswoman for the Department for Trade and Industry said the Bill was expected within the next two weeks. Fathers currently receive two weeks' paid paternity leave at a minimum payment of 106 per week.

Heads 'unprepared' for community role

Headteachers must be equipped for a public community role if they are to effectively lead extended schools, according to a senior researcher at the thinktank Demos. John Craig, who has carried out extensive research into the extended schools programme, was responding to the first detailed evaluation of it by researchers from the universities of Manchester and Newcastle.

Early years organisation NIPPA has welcomed the Labour Party's commitment to ring-fence funds for the early years sector in Northern Ireland as a 'timely, landmark decision'. The secretary of state for Northern Ireland and Wales, Peter Hain, delivered a series of commitments to improve children's life chances in his speech at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.
