To support a child, talk to their parent, whoever they are, says Sian Nisbett, nursery director of Dizzy Ducks Day Nursery, which owns two nurseries in Essex.

Anyone who hasn't been living in a cupboard over the past few weeks cannot have failed to be moved by the story of 13-year- old Alfie Patten, who allegedly fathered a baby by his 14-year- old girlfriend at the tender age of 12. A wave of shock, concern and unrest swept the nation. As a practitioner, it started me thinking of a situation that we had at one of my settings a couple of years ago.

A lady visited the nursery with a young baby and teenage daughter, 16. She liked the nursery and registered the baby immediately.

When we began processing the registration forms, we realised that the lady was not in fact the mother, but the grandmother. The teenage daughter was the baby's mother. The nursery manager was embarrassed and apologised for her clear mistake. The teenage parent said nothing throughout the entire showaround, or the registration process. It was extremely awkward.
