Leon School and Sports College is set against a challenging backdrop. The Lakes Estate in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, has a long history of social problems, high unemployment, racial tensions and teenage pregnancies. A tabloid newspaper once dubbed it 'The Baby Factory', where girls were deemed to deliberately fall pregnant in order to be rewarded with council houses and state benefits.
It is hardly surprising that many of the young people on the estate feel excluded from society and have little to aspire to. Education for them is too commonly something to be endured until they slip off the radar and repeat the cycle which feels most comfortable and inevitable for them.
