Work Matters: Learning to manage change

A new Level 5 award helps managers to keep their whole team developing, says Karen Faux

Managing change is a primary consideration in the Level 5 Award in Management, newly accredited by NDNA. Those who embark on the course will learn how to engage their teams in delivering the EYFS and managing other aspects of change in their setting. The aim is to help leaders establish shared goals and ensure that everyone in the setting is motivated, to develop professionally and personally.

The programme is suitable for those who are working at level 4, or as a senior practitioner.

Stella Ziolkowski, director of quality and workforce development at the NDNA, says, 'This award is tailored to the needs of the early years sector, and is recognised by the forthcoming Qualifications Credit Framework and offers points that can be used towards further development, such as EYP Status.

'We believe it will give practitioners a rounded approach to leadership and management, understanding that others can have input and influence direction, and reflecting on their team of individuals.'

NDNA has scheduled two 'open' courses in Manchester and London in March and can also deliver the programme in-house for nurseries and local authorities. It takes a total of nine months to complete and involves face-to-face and distance learning.

A particular focus is providing skills in helping leaders to deliver the EYFS. The third unit, 'Becoming an effective leader', shows participants how to evaluate their own ability to fulfil key responsibilities of the leadership role, as well as setting direction and gaining the commitment of others.

Ms Ziolkowski thinks there needs to be greater recognition of the need to invest in leadership skills. 'These skills are vital in ensuring a setting is sustainable, high quality and reflects on practice to achieve a culture of continuing professional development,' she says. 'This award helps to ensure all leaders are fulfilling their potential, and identify where they can improve further. There is also the advantage that it it counts towards higher level qualifications.'
