We asked for your early years views on Keir Starmer and Labour’s landslide win at the general election

Let’s see if he can start supporting early years properly and support the dying sector and pay us a fair wage where we can then put that into our teams and enhance our settings. Maybe if he looked at Switzerland and other countries that have a better education system than ours.

Children are too young at four/five to start school. Since Covid we are still playing catch-up with some children. Let’s keep them in smaller settings nurturing them, after all they are the next generation. Put your money where your mouth is Keir. Don’t ruin the early years sector, we are just about holding on as it is. Tackle the issues we have, support us, work with us ALL. SEND is a major issue and it needs urgent attention, we can’t keep neglecting our children.

Face up to reality

We have already a highly dysfunctional EY system, the worst in Europe and looks like we did not learn anything from the Nordic countries! They emphasise play, relationships and outdoor life and here we place our children in classrooms like tinned sardines.

After spending around £30k for my degree, I can still earn more cleaning or working at the checkout.

These are the sad realities and facts of our EY system.

Increase our pay

Fairer pay, as most have said. We all have to study and qualify the same as teachers and we deliver a curriculum, plan next steps and work towards child development at a crucial time. The pay should reflect this!

A fair wage

Let’s hope [Labour are] ready to pay a fair wage then. As a practitioner of nearly 40 years’ experience, and a degree with EYPS [Early Years Professional Status] I could still earn more cleaning or working a checkout. Big issue that has needed sorting for years, which is why recruiting good staff is such a problem.
