Early years providers need to think carefully about how to make the most of flexible working for parents, writes Karen Faux.

The Government's decision to press ahead with its Bill for flexible working, which will enable parents with children under the age of 16 to ask for changes to their working day, has long-term implications for providers. It will affect both the hours their staff work and the sessions they are required to provide for the parents they service.

Under current legislation, only parents of children under six have the right to request flexible working.

Nurseries could potentially see changing patterns in both areas with the expansion of this legislation, but in terms of their customers it is likely to have more of an impact on services designed for older children.
