Work Matters: Management Focus - How PVI sector inspires

Management Practice
Settings with exemplary practice are getting a chance to show it off to local authorities through a new NDNA project, says Karen Faux.

NDNA is highlighting some shining examples of good practice in the PVI sector with a series of case studies, featured on its website.

The 15 case studies, put together as part of a project with the DCSF, are aimed at raising local authorities' awareness of existing practice and providing inspiration to other nurseries looking for ways to improve.

The case studies provide examples of CPD, effective management of staff, reflective practice and developing partnerships with parents. They also show how they are achieving sustainability within their particular locations.

NDNA chief executive Purnima Tanuku says, 'With the Childcare Act 2006 giving local authorities a duty to secure sufficient, high-quality childcare, the case studies are a useful way for them to develop an understanding of how providers in all sectors ensure they deliver a high-quality service, and support the retention of their teams.'

The case studies include examples of providers who are already ahead of the Government's vision for childcare - including Blueberry Nursery in Hove, East Sussex, which has all its staff qualified to level 3 and above.

Manager Sharon Smythson says the nursery seized the Transformation Fund positively. 'The fund allowed the nursery to continue to invest in its staff, and enabled them to study for foundation degrees and EYPS,' she says. 'Other staff not on these particular courses have been offered shadowing opportunities with health officers.'

Ms Smythson reports that investment in staff is coupled with strong parental involvement in the nursery. 'Parents are involved in the assessment and recruitment of staff, which allows for a different form of questioning and a different perspective. We are also involved in a planning cycle through bi-annual surveys which pinpoint areas for development. This has helped to improve standards in the nursery and promote customer communication.'

Another case study, Cuddles Day Nursery in Poole, Dorset, prides itself on its robust approach to policy and procedures and ability to promote the healthy well-being of children through free-flow play, a five-a-day chart and attention to hygiene issues such as blowing noses and washing hands.

The nursery demonstrates sound business practice, operating in a disadvantaged area surrounded by a contrasting area of great affluence.

Purnima Tanuku says, 'These case studies demonstrate the passion and commitment that providers have for delivering high-quality services to families. They show why the PVI sector is so important to the lives of thousands of children and families, and why local authorities need to work in partnership with it.'

She adds, 'However, achieving continuing professional development requires strong partnership working, and we hope these case studies will not only help local authorities gain insight into innovative practice but also inspire new ideas for other nurseries. Hopefully they will encourage providers and local authorities to build strong and mutually beneficial relationships.'
