Agency nanny and maternity nurse Maureen Hutchings has been named Childcare Worker of the Year in the One in a Million competition run by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation to celebrate temporary workers. At a champagne reception at the House of Commons this month, Maureen, from Bedford, was presented with her trophy by a representative of the Department of Trade and Industry before enjoying a VIP cruise down the Thames. 'It felt fantastic,' says Maureen. 'I've never won anything in my life!' After 18 years of work Maureen is in constant demand for her skills, which include troubleshooting for parents who call her when a baby isn't sleeping or feeding properly. She says she stopped taking long-term jobs after children started calling her 'mummy', because 'It's just too sad to leave'. Temping also allows Maureen to keep up her sideline career acting as an extra in films and television shows between her childcare jobs - which gives a surprise twist to the actors' term 'resting'!
