A month in the life of Jasmine Maya

Once newborn Jasmine's jitteriness had ceased and she had been declared by the paediatrlcian to be in good health, she left hospital with her mum for a small maternity unit. The blood sugar tests ceased and breastfeeding was established.

By day four Jasmine's weight dropped to 2.490kg (5lb 8oz).

She did not regain her birth weight until she was almost three weeks old. She displayed many of the expected neonatal features. A variety of reflexes were present, assessed by the paediatrician when she was 18 hours old. These included sucking, rooting, grasping, stepping and the startle reflex.

Her heart rate was checked, as were her hip symmetry and rotation, and her soft palette was felt. Her spine was examined for any signs of skin abnormality and to see that it ran a straight course.
