When should I tell my child?

Most parenting specialists advise waiting until after the first trimester before breaking the news. This is as the main risk of miscarriage reduces after this time. The remaining six months will still feel like a very long time to your pre-school child. However, some people prefer to tell their child earlier to explain any large shift in energy and well-being.

How do I answer the 'where did it come from' question?

Your child is likely to be interested mainly in where the baby currently is. Talk about how the foetus is being formed. Use the correct terms, such as uterus, placenta and umbilical cord. If children are not satisfied with this they will ask questions that are more specific.
