A problem shared

Q A parent owes my nursery fees but she claims that she doesn't. I've checked with the bank but there is no record of my receiving the money due to me. The parent is still adamant that she has paid all her fees and is now becoming increasingly aggressive and threatening. How do I resolve the problem? A Defuse the situation by remaining calm. One of the simplest ways of doing this is to write to the parent. Suggest that she lets you have sight of the cheque stub payment. She will either (a) let you see it or (b) refuse.

If (a), then have your bank check this against payments received into your account. It may be the case that the transfer has taken longer than usual. If, however, payment still has not gone through, ask the parent concerned to check against her statement as to whether the money has come out of her account. If it hasn't, ask (politely) for another cheque to be re-issued and play down the whole situation, giving the parent the opportunity to save face.
