A smack or a hit

With regard to the news story about the clergyman who has called for a boycott of the NSPCC in Northern Ireland because it opposes the smacking of children (31 May), I think there is a very fine line between smacking and hitting a child. There are a lot of people who cannot differentiate between the two. To condone hitting or smacking a child publicly does not help those who beat their children and then claim they have a right to reasonable discipline.
