Admission criteria revealed

Working parents are to be given the lowest priority in Edinburgh City Council's new banding system for free full-time nursery places.

One third of existing free council nursery places are being cut to save167,000.

The council has dropped plans to close 22 schools and six early yearssettings, but proposals to reduce 1,054 free full-time nursery places to700 are set to go ahead between December and April 2008 (News, 21September).

A four-band system will act as a guide for settings when they allocatetheir free full-time places. Parents working and studying, classified inBand 4, will only be able to buy additional hours if they are availableon top of a part-time place.

No free full-time place will be allocated simply because a family meetsany one of the banding criteria.
