All children deserve a slice of the pie

I totally agree with the Pre-school Learning Alliance's assessment of current provision in England (News, 21 November). I am running a community development project for families with young children in south Bristol, on behalf of the local NHS Primary Care Trust.

The whole project has been in jeopardy due to the lack of suitable premises in the area. It is not a well-off part of the city, but neither is it a priority area receiving regeneration or Sure Start money.

My office is in a cold room attached to the Methodist chapel. I run two classes a week for parents with a creche in the local youth club where we are limited to six children. I also have a weekly group for mothers with young babies in this building, where we have to contend with the aftermath of a busy youth club session the night before, such as sticky sweets stuck to the carpet and half-empty soft drink cans perched on window ledges. The local toddler group and after-school club are both held in the cold and rather gloomy parish church.
