Around 1,500 students enrolled on early years sector endorsed foundation degrees (EYSEFD) in England during 2002-03, figures released last week by the Department for Education and Skills have shown. More than 3,500 childcare students are expected to start EYSEFD courses this year, which are currently on offer at 90 further education colleges in England. The Government has also announced 10,000 extra foundation degree places for the 2004-05 academic year, with the aim of having available 50,000 places by 2005-06. The Higher Education Funding Council for England is inviting universities and higher and further education colleges to bid for additional foundation degree places and funding.
