Around 15,600 families in

Around 15,600 families in Scotland were receiving the childcare tax credit element of Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) at the beginning of this year, of whom 92 per cent were lone parents, a report published by the Scottish Executive revealed last week. According to Benefits and Tax Credits in Scotland, February 2002, the average amount paid for the childcare component was 35 per week. In total 122,300 families received WFTC in February, with 39 awards distributed for every 1,000 people of the working age population in Scotland, slightly higher than the UK rate of 36.
