Babies screened for cystic fibrosis

All newborn babies in England will be screened for cystic fibrosis from this month.

Midwives will carry out a heel-prick blood test when babies are aroundone week old. Chair of the CF Screening Board Professor John Price saidthat newborn screening meant treatment could be started in the first fewweeks before affected babies develop chest infections and becomemalnourished.
