The committee spent most of last year listening to evidence. Documents submitted came to over 100 and 20 early years representatives gave oral evidence. The committee, made up of nine backbench MPs from all parties and chaired by Labour MP Barry Sheerman, visited settings in London's Haringey, Oxfordshire, Bristol and Denmark. Professor Christine Pascal of University College, Worcester; Rosemary Peacocke, chair of Oxfordshire Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDCP) and Professor Kathy Sylva, Department of Education, Oxford University, were specialist advisers.
