Between a rock and a hard place

I would like to comment on the news story 'Warning of staff drain from private daycare' (28 February) about a survey on the pay and status of nursery nurses working in the private sector by the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses. I own a small day nursery and I would like nothing better than to pay my staff decent wages for their hard work. Unfortunately, if I put up wages, the cost would have to be passed on to the parents. So I am stuck between providing good-quality childcare at affordable prices, and paying staff the poorest of salaries for their dedication.

In the private sector we do have a fairly high turnaround of staff, as qualified staff are turning to schools or becoming childminders from home again. Something has to give!
