Case study: learning what a cuddle is

The house was too quiet for Maria after her stepchildren left. With her background in childcare, she persuaded her partner that they should foster. Three years after their first placement, she says, 'It is a wonderful thing to do. We really enjoy it. Children come here so withdrawn that they don't want a cuddle. Half of them don't know what a cuddle is. A few weeks later they walk up and give you a big cuddle.

'People think fostering is about caring for average children, but many of them are not. They have a lot of problems. At bedtime they sometimes get upset when they miss their parents. It doesn't seem to matter what their parents have done - and some have done terrible things - the children miss them.'
