'"Research, research and double check" has become my mantra while starting my nursery. I'm a mother of three and have lived in Carterton for 11 years so I know finding childcare is a problem. A lot of young families, single parents and an air force base have created demand.

'My EYDCP helped turn gut feelings into something solid by providing data on the children in the area and confirming that local nurseries are full with waiting lists. This helped me decide to aim at the residential market and meant I didn't have to take to the streets with a questionnaire.

'It took a year to find the ideal building - in the centre of town with lots of land, near a police station and church and backing on to a play park. This prime site has paid dividends when marketing my nursery. I took it over in December and put up two huge 200 banners announcing the nursery and my contact details. They've brought a fantastic response. I expected to do a leaflet drop but if everyone who has contacted me commits to a place that won't be necessary.

'Through parents contacting me I have been able to discuss their nursery "dream sheet" and I aim to offer much of what they want, including longer opening hours. This will set me apart from the competition.

'The banners have also been my recruitment drive. I have got my core staff and a waiting list through applicants calling me on spec.

'I've contacted local nurseries to find out their charges and have taken this into consideration when planning fees. I wanted to make them comparable rather than go out on a limb but I've aimed higher with my staff salaries to help retention.

' I've also made it known that my daughter will be attending the nursery so parents and staff know I'm running it as a mother, not just a businessperson -it's a good selling point.'
