Roger Singleton, the outgoing chief executive of Barnardo's, received a knighthood upon his retirement last month. Mr Singleton, who joined the charity in 1974 as deputy director of childcare and was appointed chief executive in 1984, said, 'I hope this award also recognises the enormous commitment that Barnardo's staff, volunteers and supporters make to the organisation. It has been a huge privilege for me to lead so many important changes in Barnardo's.'
Dr Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland, a national agency for public and voluntary organisations, was awarded an OBE for her work with children and families.
She said, 'I am very pleased that Children in Scotland has been recognised for its work in improving the lives of all children and their families. We have been particularly concerned to ensure that the needs of young children should receive more attention and that the value of working with young children is reflected in the qualifications, pay and conditions of those working with them.'
