Child tax credit

Around a million families in Britain are not receiving the child tax credit they are entitled to, Government figures obtained last week by the Conservatives have shown. According to the figures, only 4.2 million out of 6.5 million families entitled to the new tax credit are getting it, while a further 1.3 million families on income support or jobseeker allowance are to be moved on to the credit - leaving a million families who are entitled to the child tax credit but have not received it since it was introduced in April. In a House of Commons debate last week, shadow work and pensions secretary David Willetts described the situation as a 'shambles' and added, 'The source of the problem is not Inland Revenue, nor even software problems and computing problems. The real source of the problem is the policy decisions taken by ministers.'
