Childcare month to broaden focus

The remit for National Childcare Month is being widened to include early education, health and family support. The month of activities across England in June will now be known as National Sure Start Month and is being organised by the Kids' Clubs Network (KCN) instead of the Daycare Trust, which ran last year's successful initiative.

KCN chief executive Anne Longfield said she did not think the importance of childcare would be lost in the widened focus. She added, 'We want to build very much on what happened last year with National Childcare Month, which was a great success for us all, and to recognise that we are all working together much more.'

A Department for Education and Skills spokeswoman said the month's name was changed because the creation of the Sure Start Unit meant that 'everything has been moved under one roof, including childcare'.
