Childcare scrutiny

Childcare is one of three key areas being scrutinised by the Government as part of its next spending review, chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown said last week. The childcare review's terms of reference will consider three areas - whether the long-term projection for childcare and early years education is sufficient to meet the Government's aims for employment and educational attainment; whether the expansion is proceeding quickly enough; and whether there are areas where more remains to be done, such as childcare for school-age children and the role of extended schools. The other two key areas are a further review on poverty, which will set out what further action is required to halve child poverty in Britain by 2010 and eradicate it by 2020, and a devolving decision-making review of 'how best to achieve decent delivery and responsive local and regional services'.
