Childcarers face down deregulation

The Government may be forced to back down over proposals to deregulate group childcare for six- and seven-year-olds because opposition from the sector has been so fierce, Naomi Eisenstadt, director of the Sure Start Extended Schools and Family Group admitted last week. Further protests were raised at measures in the Bill to drop the Quality Assurance and Investor in Children schemes.

Delegates to the conference 'A Sure Start for Every Child 2005' in London grilled Ms Eisenstadt on the rationale behind the deregulation reforms outlined in the Childcare Bill consultation, which closes in a week.

Ms Eisenstadt told critics, 'In part it is about the difference in what is a few hours after school and a whole daycare setting. It's also the difference between the ability of a five- or six-year-old to talk to their parents about whether they like it or not, and a baby or three-year-old who can't.'
