Childminders inspected at no notice

Inspections of childminders in Wales will now include unannounced visits, under changes introduced by the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) last week. The new inspection process aims to focus more on the day-to- day experiences of those who use and provide the services. Before a prospective visit childminders will be sent a self-assessment form to complete and the visit will take place some time in the following three months.

Unannounced inspections will now take place every two years rather than annually and will include verbal feedback on the day. Parents will be asked to complete a questionnaire so that they can also express their views on the service provided.

CSIWchief executive Rob Pickford said, 'The reform is based on ensuring that the experiences of service users are at the core of CSIW's work.

Closer working with other regulatory bodies will help streamline procedures, avoiding unnecessary administrative burdens being placed on providers of services.'
