Childminders left out of care count

Childminders should be counted in the Scottish Executive's childcare census, claims the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA). The SCMA says the 2002 Pre-school and Daycare Census (News, 19 September), carried out at the end of January, is 'unhelpful' because it only covers centres and does not give information on individual caregivers or childminders.

The statistics are also lacking, says the SCMA, because they do not give a direct comparison between local authorities, between urban and rural areas, or between different providers. This made it difficult to assess developments in early years services or see if Scotland is meeting European Union targets.

SCMA director Ann McNellan said, 'The SCMA despairs of being able to obtain up-to-date information on the number of childminders registered in Scotland.
