City offers cash to children's groups

Voluntary and community organisations in Sunderland are being urged to apply for funding from the City Council to support the social, emotional and physical well-being of children in the communities they work with.

Non-profit organisations have until the end of the financial year, 31 March, to access funding of up to £750 from the 2010/11 Children's Centre Inspiration Fund.

Since Sunderland City Council launched the fund in 2009 it has donated £83,000 to community groups. Those who have benefited include the Family Focus Parents' group from West Sunderland, who used the money to take local families on an educational trip to Whitehouse Farm in Morpeth and Shiney Row Childcare Centre, who were able to renovate the centre's outside space and play area used by parents and children.

Raj Singh, extended services manager for children's services at the council, said, 'The Inspiration Fund has already allowed many groups across the city to give their members something really special, whether a day out, safer outdoor play facilities or an entirely new service. Small improvements like this can make a big difference to people's lives and give them something to look forward to.

'There is still funding available for groups, so I would urge all voluntary and community organisations working with young children to make use of this wonderful resource.'
