Nursery World - Commissioner post step closer

Scotland is closer to gaining a children's champion following the Scottish Executive setting out the commissioner's role and remit last week. The Executive sees the independent children's commissioner's work as focusing on the four main areas of promoting and safeguarding children's rights, communicating with children, investigations, and promoting good practice. These points are outlined in the Executive's formal response to the report from the education, culture and sport committee on a Proposed Commissioner for Children and Young People Bill.

The Scottish Executive response states, 'The Executive welcomes the committee's proposal that a commissioner should have responsibility for the promotion and safeguarding of children's rights and welcomes the emphasis in the committee's report on communicating with children and young people.

'It is important that a commissioner is able to add real value to existing systems and mechanisms and not duplicate the work of existing agencies. The Executive considers that the commissioner could play an important role in closing the opportunity gap for Scotland's children and young people.'
