Children's champion moves a step closer

An independent children's commissioner to protect and promote the rights of children and young people in Northern Ireland could be appointed by late summer. The post has come a step closer following the publication last week of an advertisement for the post of Commissioner for Children and Young People for Northern Ireland, placed by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. It said the commissioner's main aim 'will be to safeguard and promote the rights and best interests of children and young people' and added, 'The commissioner will be an important, impartial and influential champion independent of Government; a watchdog and a driver for change.'
