Nursery World - Council services compete for cash

Local authorities have until 10 September to seek Beacon status and a share of 5m by demonstrating good practice in delivering services, including early years and childcare and transforming the school workforce. Councils must submit an 'intention to apply' form by 14 August to take part in the Beacon Council scheme. The fifth round of the scheme was launched by minister for local government Nick Raynsford at a recent Local Government Association conference. LGA chairman Sir Jeremy Beecham strongly urged local authorities to apply under the 10 'themes', which also include transport, housing renewal and other social policy areas. 'There is a lot of good work going on in local government and service delivery across the country, and it is important that the Beacon scheme captures this so that others can learn from it,' he said.
