Resources: Roughened pieces of wood and sandpaper of various grades

PLODs: Encourage children to work at sanding the roughened wood. Their effort and persistence will pay off and instil in them a sense of satisfaction at their achievement as the wood starts to become smooth.

Ideas to explore: Enriching children's descriptive vocabulary

Resources: Soft and hard woods of various textures, shapes, sizes, scents and colours. Off-cuts of manufactured wood, such as plywood, chipboard and medium density fibreboard (MDF)

PLODs: Discuss the smell, feel and appearance of the various types of wood.
