'Design buildings for out-of-school'

Guidance on school design published by the Scottish Executive last week has highlighted the need to consider how facilities could be used to provide out-of-school care when developing new buildings. The recommendations are made in The 21st Century School: Building our Future: Scotland's School Estate, a Scottish Executive report launched by education minister Peter Peacock last week, which says that imaginative and creative design should be an integral part of school buildings.

According to the guidance, schools can help in the provision of high-quality, sustainable out-of-school care, one of the key aspects of the Scottish childcare strategy. The guidance recommends that over the course of the next year, local authorities should work with childcare partnerships to examine the scope for using local authority premises to provide out-of-school care.

It also points out that local authorities need to consider school design in planning to accommodate the integrated community schools approach, which all Scottish schools are expected to introduce by 2007. Schools implementing this approach will deliver integrated education, social work, family support and health improvement services.
