DfES guidelines give support for disability

Parents of disabled children in England can expect better co-ordinated health, education and social services under guidance published last week. Three sets of linked guidelines, published by the Government in collaboration with Scope and the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, show how services can be family-centred and integrated, with access to the latest health technology.

Launching the guidance at the Phoenix Centre in Bromley, Kent, a facility providing multi-agency support for nought to five-year-olds with a range of disabilities, Sure Start minister Catherine Ashton said it was crucial to ensure that children got the right support from the start. 'If a disabled child's needs are identified early and they get the right support they will be better prepared for school, and schools in turn will be in a better position to continue to help them.'
