In June, Michelle Roberts was proudly receiving an accolade on behalf of the Cana Afterschool Club in Penywaun in South Wales at the Excellence in Childcare Awards. Now funding has run out and she is battling to save this vital facility in an industrial wasteland scarred by mining closures. 'It is looking pretty grim at the moment, but we are hoping we can get new funding sources in October. It would be total devastation if we had to close.' She says the children, some of whom have just enjoyed a watersports weekend in Dorset, 'would have nothing to do, get bored and channel their energies into other things' if the club closed. It's a different story at the Buccaneers out-of-school club in Cambridgeshire. Carol Klein, Playworker of the Year winner, says the Pearl Assurance group offered sponsorship as soon as it heard about the club and there has 'never been a need to raise funds'.
