Early reading project is based on EYFS

Early years practitioners and childminders will be helped to instil a love of reading in children through a project launched last week by the National Literacy Trust.

The Early Reading Connects scheme, funded by the DCSF, aims to bringtogether resources and ideas based on the four themes of the Early YearsFoundation Stage.

Practitioners who sign up to the free scheme will receive the EarlyReading Connects family involvement toolkit. A website atwww.earlyreadingconnects.org.uk will offer ideas, case studies andforums where practitioners can link up to share tips or ask foradvice.

Early Reading Connects has been adapted from the Reading Connectsinitiative, which has been running in primary and secondary schools forfive years.

Rebecca Green, project manager for Early Reading Connects, said, 'TheBercow review highlighted the need for action when it comes tosupporting children and their families to give them the best foundationsfor language and literacy development.

'We received a lot of positive feedback from the Reading Connects schemein schools, but we've adapted it because practitioners wanted more of anearly years bias.'
