Early success for pupil plans

A reporting system being considered by the Scottish Executive is helping to provide early years practitioners with a broader picture of nursery children's development, a conference heard last week. Pilots of Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) in Dumfries and Galloway for each child aged from three years have been getting parents more involved in their child's education and were giving nursery workers a more complete view of the child's development, according to Isabel Murphy, education officer at Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The PLPs are designed to take a broad view of children's development and include achievements outside the school setting. The Scottish Executive is currently consulting on whether to introduce PLPs for all children of nursery age. If they get the go-ahead nursery workers will be responsible for creating and completing the plans.
