Happy New Year, everybody. 2007 doesn't promise to be an easy year for those in early years education and childcare, but it should be an interesting one. We will see the Comprehensive Spending Review; the roll-out of children's centres and extended schools will continue; free nursery education hours are to be increased, amid huge unrest about the cost to the private and voluntary sector; the shape of the Early Years Foundation Stage will become clearer; the Early Years Professional programme will be in full swing; and the Ofsted Childcare Register will launch! And through it all, early years and childcare practitioners will continue to do their best to educate and support the young children in their care.

And through it all, early years and childcare practitioners will continue to do their best to educate and support the young children in their care.

Nursery World will, of course, bring you all the latest news, analyse what it means for you and your job, and provide a wealth of information and advice about every aspect of your practice. We've got some great new posters and pull-outs - including, for starters, a series of art posters depicting famous paintings, along with ideas for using them (first one free with this issue), and a three-part pull-out on the vital issue of staff recruitment. And we'll be featuring regular round-ups of new products to help you choose the best resources (see pages 20-21).
