National Parents' Week this week has been marked by the publication of several reports into family life today in the UK, including Making Britain Family Friendly from the National Family and Parenting Institute (see News, page 9). Its conclusion is that our society is still far from welcoming and accepting of children and young people. Increased rights for flexible working were also seen as a priority by parents. There is no doubt that despite progress in recent years, there is still a long way to go in all sorts of areas. Two long-running campaigns for legislative change are relevant here - the call to ban smacking of children, which would do so much to improve their rights, and the pressure for a nanny register, which would both enhance children's safety and increase options for affordable childcare with tax credits.

Overall, a fundamental change in society's attitudes to children is needed, however, and this includes listening to their views. A major new study into good practice in consulting with children is the subject of our feature 'Points of view' (pages 24-25). Finding out children's opinions and wishes about their experiences should be an everyday part of working with our youngest citizens.
