It is an indication of just how quickly things are moving in the world of nursery groups that no sooner had we published our latest Top 20 league table in the new Nursery Chains magazine (3 June) than it was all change as Nord Anglia added Jigsaw to its recent list of purchases. The acquisition takes Nord Anglia to the top of the league table, and comes on top of the recent deal to buy Leapfrog. Jigsaw has struggled with financial losses in recent years, as well as the tragedy of the death of five-month-old Thomas Egan when in the care of one of its nurseries. The next few years will see some tough challenges for the private nursery groups, and more such consolidation is likely. We have printed the updated Top 20 league table in this week's News (see page 4), although there will no doubt be further shifts before the next Nursery Chains in November. Next week's Special Report will provide further analysis of the Nord Anglia moves and their significance for the nursery sector.
