Education and skills

Education and skills secretary Estelle Morris has told the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to sharpen up its act and monitor the performance of examination boards more effectively. Ms Morris said the 'Quinquennial Review', an independent report on the QCA published last week, showed it had many strengths but needed to focus more sharply on the ability of examinations boards to deliver. She said school standards minister David Miliband would work closely with the QCA and newly-appointed chief executive Ken Boston would address the concerns set out in the review as a matter of urgency when he took up his post in September. The publication of the report by consultants PricewaterhouseCooper was brought forward a year because of the Government's concerns about the exam system following a number of blunders last year.
