Many childminders may wonder why they need to be trained in a job they have been doing for years, so I hope my own experience will encourage them to look at the training option more seriously. During the past three years I have completed the National Childminding Association's childcare courses ICP (Introducing Childminding Practice), DCP (Developing Childminding Practice), and ECP (Extending Childminding Practice). These three qualifications accumulate into a further certificate CCP (Certificate in Childminding Practice). This has now enabled me to go on to a fast-track NVQ level 3.
These courses have increased my self-confidence and self-worth, and have enabled me to develop the skills I already had. They have also made me aware that I do a professional job, a 'proper' job, and that I'm not 'just' a childminder, and that the children in my care are receiving a good, safe, secure and educational service.
