Firm corners of service

The comments and assumptions made by Helen Penn concerning private day nurseries (News, 10 February) are general observations and opinions which invite debate. I hope this letter balances Dr Penn's provocative statements. I would agree that 'in the need to make a profit the temptation is to cut corners', but I have absolutely no doubt that there are a number of private owner/managers of single nurseries who manage to resist temptation!

My business partner and I started Playday Nursery in 1995 after retiring from our professional careers. We have never had any trouble in resisting said temptation by 'cutting corners on staffing, outdoor play standards and qualifications of staff', or indeed anything else. We have no desire to risk our reputation - only to create a high-quality nursery service.

We were aware from the outset that any return would be minimal and it would take a considerable time before we would see any financial rewards.
