First century

The prestigious Princess Christian College in Manchester is celebrating its first 100 years with a centennial reunion, to be held probably on 6 July. The residential childcare college was founded in April 1901 under the patronage of Princess Christian, third daughter of Queen Victoria, and has supplied nannies to Hollywood celebrities as well as royalty. In its early days the college's nine-month training course meant 14-hour days of tuition, starting at 6am, with compulsory evening lectures and sewing, and no holidays. Student life, like family life and nannying, has changed beyond recognition since then, but what better way to appreciate it than to hear from former students and anyone else who's been involved with the college? For up-to-date information about the centenary observations, contact college principal Stephanie Inman on 0161 224 4560.
