Hands on
Right from babyhood, children show awareness of their hands, even fascination with them. They use their sense of touch to explore the world around them. They learn to count on their fingers, and do finger rhymes when they first start to sing. For children with disabilities, using their hands to sign in Makaton or BSL or to read Braille is a vital part of their learning experience.
A project on hands could link easily with other common projects in the Foundation Stage, such as 'ourselves' or 'our bodies', but it also works as a valuable topic in its own right, encouraging children to engage in tactile experiences.
