Children Learning: Communication, Language and Literacy. Jean Ensing and Brenda Spencer. Spencer Publications, 11.99, 01932 240374

Reviewed by Tina Hendy, childcare services manager, University of Bath This book is aimed at all early years practitioners who are working with children from three to five years (Foundation Stage). It gives practical illustrations of how Foundation Stage guidelines can work in communication, language and literacy.

It is very colourful and beautifully illustrated, with colourful sketches of children carrying out activities. The authors have made the book easy to follow by dividing it into three main sections: communication, reading and writing.

Each section includes a detailed observation of an activity that is linked to the Foundation Stage goals. It suggests new key words practitioners can use to extend children's knowledge and experience. The authors have also included quotes from children and teachers.
