I started to read this book with my professional hat on and partway in I had to change headgear and continue from a personal point of view.
Jenny Froude is the mother of a baby who was left profoundly deaf after meningitis. This is her account of her determination to help Tom, her son, communicate. She makes a strong case for encouraging deaf children to sign as a means of communication, with many anecdotes of how Tom's success is the result of his signing skills. Practitioners new to this field would need to read counter- arguments to form a balanced opinion.
