From nursery to out-of-school care

The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) is advising its members to set up out-of-school provision to attract custom and provide a 'complete service for parents', even although it may not be profitable in itself. Currently, 20 per cent of NDNA members provide out-of-school care - 180 nurseries which offer 3,288 places. 'It is especially useful if parents have two children at a nursery and the first leaves to go to school,' said NDNA chief executive Rosemary Murphy. 'In the initial stages, both children can be picked up from the same setting and it provides continuity of care. But, after a year or two, children usually prefer to go to the school club,' she warned.

Another problem is that all space in nurseries is subject to business rates, so managers can't afford to leave a room empty until 3pm. To get around the problem, some nurseries use school or parish halls where they don't have to pay rates, or rooms that house pre-school education sessions that end in the early afternoon.
