Resources
A selection of fruit - apples, pears, bananas, melons, kiwis etc plates
small knives short skewers or cocktail sticks
Step by step
* Wash your hands and the fruit you need to prepare.
* Discuss the texture, look and smell of the fruit.
* Identify the names of the different parts of the fruit as you examine them. For example, the apple has a core and pips at the centre, white flesh inside, green, red or yellow skin, and a wooden stalk.
* An adult should remove the skin of harder fruits. The children can peel the bananas.
* Give the children plates and small knives to chop up the fruit.
* Let them take turns to cut the different textures and place each variety of fruit on a different plate.
* Then give them short skewers or cocktail sticks to pierce and thread each of the kebabs.
* Have children count the number of pieces as they put them on the skewers. Six pieces of each will be ample. This activity gives children the responsibility for preparing their own snack.
